West Kowloon Cultural District, Art Basel, Hong Kong
created the installation structure for M+, the new museum for visual
culture at the West Kowloon Cultural District, Hong Kong in close
collaboration with M+ Curator Tobias Berger. The structure sited in Art
Basel HK 2014 brings a new kind of curatorial focus, which allows the
public to experience curating unique exhibitions through the interactive
and ever-changing display. Visitors are inspired to learn, observe,
touch, enquire and partake within the process of curating the future
museum spaces of M+.
exhibition presents the museumís growing collection with
interactive magnetic images of artworks, along with the presentation on
the M+ building design by Herzog & de Meuron with TFP Farrells and
Ove Arup & Partners HK. The space communicates new arts
opportunities that the future museum cultivates locally and
structure is a permeable and transparent platform that promotes how art
exhibition can be interactive and engaging through play. It reaches out
to people of all ages to explore the arts in its forms of materiality,
construction and engineering. It promotes thinking, communication and
interaction between the people and the arts.
The lightweight structure is a modular system, which composes of 21 modules that are connected together. The modular architecture consists of 21 reinforced concrete blocks, 500 reinforced steel bars and 138 planks of plywood. Together, the structure forms a light veil of translucent screens, connecting the inside and the outside. The ambiguity of boundaries draws people into the space through play and curiosity.
concrete structure expresses the change of time as the surfaces dry out
and colour lightened over the course of the exhibition. The installation
witnesses the process of making in architecture and measures time and
the passing of time.
By providing diverse ways of interpreting architecture for the arts, the structure is designed without walls and boundaries. It extends and connects spaces together for visitors to learn, explore and experiment the arts freely. Allowing the viewers to experience a different level of contemporary approach to the arts, in which they can be touched and repositioned. The exhibition re-examines everyday spaces to become places for inspiration and cultural education.
M+, the new museum for visual culture at the West Kowloon Cultural District is participating in Art Basel in Hong Kong 2014 with a presentation on the museumís building design and collection.
